Hi Deacon - I’m Ryan Barrett.
You might be wondering what all this is about. I am applying to be your new marketing manager and I figured why not approach my application process in the same way I would work for you—with creativity, attention to detail, and having a little fun. I hope you enjoy learning about me and why I’m a great fit for the role (and the pizza).
RFPs are my happy place.
As a detail-oriented creative, I love creating proposal responses that give the client complete confidence in the work. At Nemo Design, I worked closely with leadership and biz dev team to design and submit RFPs and presentations—setting the team up for success. With Deacon’s portfolio and proven history of great design, your RFPs are starting from a strong foundation.
My first construction project was a bike ramp.
I didn’t know it at the time, but building this ramp with my BMX buddies would give me the confidence and basic skills to work with my hands. Fast forward years later, I am tackling home improvement projects and, believe it or not, still riding BMX bikes.
Content producing content.
I am well-versed in writing and creating visual content across social media, website/blog, newsletters, photography, presentation materials, and collateral. These tasks and tools have been part of every job I’ve had since 2008.
Tradeshows + Events
Producing events has been in my job description since 2010. I have managed and executed everything from to producing materials and booth experience, event promotion, setup and teardown, manning the booth, and everything in between.
Award winning award winner.
Awards are a great way to hype up the team and get recognition for a job well done. At Nemo Design I targeted important industry awards, submitted our most compelling work, and came away with some wins. Most notably:
Outside Magazine’s best places to work 3 years in a row
Ad Age Small Agency Award - NW
“The Standard is the standard.”
I wrote the book (literally) for River City Bicycles brand standards. I understand that adhering to brand standards is just as important as contractors following their design plans.
(Trivia question: What Steel City coach is attributed to that quote?)
Marketing + metrics
You have to be able to see the big picture, but also get into the weeds. This is what modern marketing requires and I am built for it.

I hope this illustrates some of my qualifications and creativity. My skillset of working with creative tools, websites, presentation building, and email marketing lends itself well to this role. I also love dogs.
Your company values align with my own—honesty, integrity, teamwork and continuous improvement. And on top of that, your charitable foundation aligns with my desire to give back to my community, having served on the board of Gateway Green park in North East Portland since 2017.
I would love to join your team at Deacon.
